What We Do

Recover. Refine. Return.

Recover

We recover lithium-rich battery materials and upgrade them into products for the market. We have the capability to process up to 30,000 metric tons of battery materials through our shredding lines, producing black mass, the concentrated material from which critical minerals are extracted.

Refine

Our lithium extraction process selectively dissolves lithium which we refine into a finished product on a single site, without primary mining or foreign refining.

Return

We return battery-grade and technical-grade lithium carbonate to the supply chain under executed offtake agreements, closing the loop between end-of-life batteries and the next generation of new batteries for energy storage, defense systems, and electric vehicles.

Supply & Offtake

Built for Flexibility

Our products — lithium carbonate, black mass and concentrated metal oxide — are backed by a number of long-term offtake agreements with international partners. These represent significant contracted value across their lifespans. Built-in volume, pricing, and location flexibility allows us to service these agreements from both our existing and planned future production sites, creating insulation to price fluctuations.

R3 Lithium maintains a broad portfolio of supply and offtake partnerships and contracts, giving us flexibility to source the feedstock we need and maximize the value of the products we produce.

Strengthening Domestic Supply Chains

We compliment these long-term agreements with spot market sales and short-term contracts, allowing us to capture upside pricing and stay closely engaged across the offtake value chain.

By sourcing recyclable battery materials and recycled black mass, then recovering the contained lithium domestically, R3 Lithium strengthens the foundation, resilience and independence of the U.S. and E.U. battery supply chains. In doing we support moving these away from their current reliance on foreign sourced, and often virgin material, in direct alignment with the domestic critical minerals priorities shaping current industrial and energy policy.

Partnerships Built to Last

Our strategy is to develop long-term partnerships, across the value and supply chains, which are predicated on value collaboration, industry growth and building a strong and resilient industry. This can only be achieved through deep and meaningful relationships based upon partnerships which go beyond being simply transactional.

Consistent, Long-Term Access

By developing these we gain long-term, consistent access both to the battery feedstock scrap generated by gigafactories and OEMs, and the end-of-life batteries recovered from vehicles or other applications.

Toll Shredding and Black Mass

Additionally, we maintain strong relationships with the shredding and black mass generation supply chain across North America and Europe, and we aim to collaboratively develop these to the benefit of the battery material ecosystem. This creates optionality to toll shred feedstock and to buy black mass, supplementing our own production and providing further certainty of high-quality, cost-effective supply.

Powering Our Covington Facility

Together, these sources feed our shredding facility in Covington, where we produce black mass, lithium carbonate and concentrated metal oxide. This diversified sourcing approach ensures we have the quality and volume of feedstock required to keep our shredding and lithium production lines running at capacity, now and as we scale.

Closed Loop

Supply & Offtake

Closed Loop

A True Full-Cycle Model

R3 Lithium is uniquely positioned to develop closed-loop, integrated partnerships with EV OEMs and battery manufacturers. In doing so with our investor and industry partners R3 Lithium will create a true full-cycle, closed-loop solution that is the embodiment of our 'Recover. Refine. Return.' model.

A Fast-Growing Priority

As the North American and European EV and battery manufacturing base continues to scale, we expect closed loop partnerships to become one of the fastest growing and most important components of our supply and offtake portfolio.

Reliable Feedstock, Secure Access

These relationships provide a reliable, forecastable stream of feedstock that reduces our exposure to global markets, while giving our partners confidence in secure, long-term access to the lithium carbonate their battery production requires.

From Scrap to Next-Gen Batteries

Under these agreements, scrap and end-of-life materials generated across battery production and vehicle lifecycles, flow directly into our process, with the lithium we recover from the produced black mass then flowing back to the OEMs, and into the next generation of batteries.

Shorter Chain, Lower Costs

This closed loop model shortens the supply chain, reduces transportation and logistics costs, and gives our OEM partners a domestic, traceable source of lithium that supports their own, and increasingly governmental led, sustainability and localization demand.
